Accreditation

The Strategic Management Institute (SMI) is the accrediting body for strategy certification (Certified Strategy Practitioner – CSP). smiknowledge provides access to accreditation – globally.

Through accreditation the SMI recognises those who have completed our course work and as an outcome, can demonstrate that they can successfully apply that learning to practice. An overview of the Pathway to Accreditation for the various levels of certification follows:

Strategy Practitioner Accreditation is maintained by continual membership of the SMI/smiknowledge and completion of a minimum of 20 hours of continual professional development per annum. Details of the various accreditation levels follow:

 

Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Affiliate

SMI’s Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Affiliate accreditation can be obtained through completion of the Fundamentals of Strategy Thought and Practice (FSTP 1) course and successful completion of the following test regime as an outcome from that course.

Assessment procedure (Affiliate): Two multiple choice quizzes (each 25% = 50%) and one of the following:
A) One simulation review 50% (2,000 to 3,000 words): White Label Restaurant, People Express. Answer these questions from the simulation of your choice:
Q1: How did you perform against your strategy?
Q2: What strategy tools did you use to get to your answer and how useful were they?
Q3: Please submit an illustrative Strategic Architecture, Strategy Blueprint and one other element of the fully integrated Strategic Management Framework that you found to be of benefit.
Q4: What worked and what did not in pursuing your objectives?
Q5: What would you do differently next time?
Submit (online) reflections based on each simulation two weeks after you have completed the simulation session.
Or
B) Case study review (50%) (2,000 to 3,000 words): One full case review based on the case study presented in the course text book “Contemporary Strategy Practice”. to be submitted within 2 weeks following your completion of the course.

Affiliate accreditation can also be awarded to participating members of SMI who have completed similar content to our Fundamentals of Strategic Thought and Practice (FSTP 1) course through an MBA or equivalent. We recommend contacting us to discuss your eligibility should you wish to apply for a recognition of prior learning.

Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Associate

SMI’s Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Associate accreditation recognises those who demonstrate knowledge and skills in advanced strategy practice and strategic management. Accreditation pathways are particularly suited to senior executives, senior leaders, emerging senior leaders, consultants and academics within a business profession.

Associate accreditation can be achieved via a number of pathways:

  • Individuals who hold an SMI Affiliate Certification are eligible to complete the online Advanced Strategy Practices Course (ASPC 2). Accreditation is awarded to those who meet the Associate prerequisites, following successful completion of the online ASPC course and associated certification requirements.Certification assessment procedure (Associate): Completion of a 2,000-word case study submission or presentation (On Line (Webinar) or in Face to Face meetings where possible) that clearly demonstrate the application of at least ten elements of the content contained in the ASPC course.
  • Individuals who have completed a recognised fundamentals of strategy course through an MBA or equivalent are eligible for direct entry to the online Advanced Strategy Practices Course (ASPC 2). Accreditation is awarded to those who meet the Associate prerequisites, following successful completion of the online ASPC course and associated certification requirements.
  • Executive level, senior leaders or emerging senior leaders with 10+ years relevant business experience are eligible to complete the online Senior Leader Master Course (SLMC). Accreditation is awarded to those who meet the Associate prerequisites, following successful completion of the online SLMC course and associated certification requirements.
  • Executive level, senior leaders or emerging senior leaders with 10+ years relevant business experience are eligible to participate in the face-to-face Senior Leader Master Course (SLMC). Accreditation is awarded to those who meet the Associate prerequisites, following successful completion of the face-to-face SLMC course and associated certification requirements.
  • Individuals who have successfully completed an SMI corporate program are eligible for Associate accreditation. Please contact SMI to discuss your eligibility, you may be required to complete additional certification requirements to receive accreditation.

Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Senior Associate

SMI’s Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Senior Associate accreditation recognises those who demonstrate the highest level of knowledge and skills in advanced strategy practice and strategic management. Fundamentally, the Senior Associate certification is an extension of the Associate certification pathway.

Senior Associate accreditation is awarded to those who meet the Associate prerequisites, following successful completion of the online Advanced Strategy Practices Course (ASPC 2) or online Senior Leader Master Course (SLMC) in Strategy Practice or face-to-face Senior Leader Master Course (SLMC) in Strategy Practice. To receive Senior Associate accreditation, participants of the Associate level courses must satisfy additional certification requirements described as follows:

Assessment procedure (Senior Associate): Completion of submission or presentation as a requirement of Associate requirements as well as two additional 2,000-word case study submissions or presentations (On Line (Webinar) or Face to Face).

Fellow

SMI awards Fellow accreditation to exceptional practitioners in strategy. The award is offered to those who are acknowledged as highly experienced, high achieving academics and strategy practitioners.

Typically, SMI individually invites candidates to join as a Fellow. However, it does accept applications from nominees of highly regarded and respected individuals, or directly from individuals under certain circumstances. Applications for Fellow are reviewed by the SMI Advisory Board.

Prerequisites

  • A strong track record in academia or senior executive role
  • Current senior level experience or qualifications in strategy practice
  • Demonstrable exceptional outcomes from strategy practice
  • Two professional references

Certified Strategy Practitioner (CSP), Ongoing Professional Development

Following accreditation, Certified Strategy Practitioners are required to maintain their membership of SMI and participate in a minimum of 20 hours of ongoing professional development annually to retain their certification. Through professional development, participants will continue to refine and grow their advanced skills in strategy practice and management, ensuring the application of future orientated effective business strategy.

Ongoing professional development opportunities are provided by SMI through Participating Membership. Additionally, business related educational activities conducted externally to the SMI are recognised as ongoing professional development.

Eligible activities include:

  • Participation in SMI Webinars
  • Participation in SMI Seminars and Workshops
  • Attendance at SMI Networking events
  • Attendance at SMI Conferences
  • Reading of SMI Whitepapers and Case Studies
  • Reading of external business related educational materials
  • Participation in Simulation Case Studies presented by and/or through SMI
  • Participation in external business related professional courses
  • Participation in external business related independent research and content creation
  • Participation in external business related seminars and conferences
